Front-end developer

Salary Competitive

We are looking for another developer to join us in Stockholm. Here you will be part of a team of people who have backgrounds in User Experience Design, Development, Testing, Project Lead and Sales but who have been trained in accessibility. Start off with some training yourself and join one of our existing project! We are currently helping to build a school platform for the special needs curriculum, and a dating app for people with intellectual disabilities. Our last project was www.funkify.org.

You will officially be an IT consultant with expert knowledge in Digital Accessibility, but if you don't feel like an expert on "a11y" yet, that's fine. We do need skilled front-end developers though, so if you don't feel like an expert in that there may be better jobs to apply for.

This company is a bit unusual though: your job description in this organisation will always be the same:

"Search for the most meaningful job to do. Do it."

All of your colleagues have the same description. Since you are likely strongest in the software development area you will probably find it most meaningful to help us with our current development projects that we do for other customers. After they are done, it may be more meaningful to study up on some new tech or learn more accessibility, before helping the sales group send out some CVs to get us new consulting jobs or arrange the summer party with the Event group. When new in-house projects appear, it is your job to decide what your most meaningful role would be, and do it as effectively as you can.

This is a company where you can grow into any role you personally align with, and it is your responsibility to do so. You will have the power and resources at your hand. The only thing we have in common is that whatever software we produce or test - we make it accessible!

After the first couple of weeks no one will tell you exactly what to do, but we are all here to help, and to give suggestions if you want them.

To be a little bit more specific, here are some techniques we use in current in-house projects:

  • HTML, Javascript and CSS obviously!
  • React or Angular as frameworks
  • Bootstrap or Material UI
  • Java + Spring, or Node.js in the back-end
  • AWS and Heroku for cloud servers
  • CircleCI for CI/CD
  • Webpack for builds
  • etc...

Don't like the tech-stack? Change it for your next project! We are more interested in finding the right people, as technology can be learned!

You have to find Accessible Technology interesting!

This companies purpose is to make the digital world more accessible to people with disabilities. It probably won't change soon, so if you don't want to do that, then there are other jobs that may suit you better :)

If you know what is wrong with this code-snippet, let us know! It will help you in the recruitment process!

*Hint - it's not the missing function declaration we are looking for...

Working at
Axess Lab

Axess Lab makes the digital world accessible to people with disabilities. We are designers, UX people, programmers and educators who are choosing to spend our time helping make the digital world accessible by everyone. As you start working here, you are given training in digital accessibility, you get to join user-testing sessions with people who are blind, deaf, or have motor impairments to see how life in the digital world works for them. We build software, review websites, educate - and more! Axess Lab is a self-managing organisation of responsible, social, easy-going tech-enthusiasts. Self-management means that you will likely not be used to how things are done here. The way we work and organize ourselves creates true professionals, and result in true personal growth, but it is not for everyone. Here are some examples of self-management, explained in a lot more detail in our "Handbook for colleagues".You set your own salaryYou have your own company credit card and can use the company's resources as you likeAny idea you have, you are allowed to pursue. Any problem you find, you are responsible to fixNothing is "Someone else's job"We do not have specific job descriptions, your job is simply to "find the most meaningful task, and pursue it!"No bosses or middle-managersGenerally we aim to fulfill the purpose of the company together, while also fulfilling our personal purposes. We recognize that money is like the air we breath: we need it to stay alive, but we don't live to breath! We strive to create something larger than ourselves, and to have true impact.
